“Before fixing what you’re looking at, check what you’re looking through.”
Mark Nepo said that, in his breathtaking work, The Book of Awakening.
I’ve always had a tendency to let my eyeglass lenses get really dirty. My ex-husband was great about gently taking them off my face and giving them a thorough scrub-down.
It was always a shock how differently the world would look through clean glasses.
Life is much the same, don’t you think? All our comings and goings throw a consistent stream of muck at our ‘lenses’. We end up with cloudy vision, sure, but also elbow length gloves and ear plugs, wondering why everything feels weird, and… what did you say?
Thank goodness we’ve also got a wide variety of ways to polish the glass and peel the coverings. Yoga and meditation work better than those spiffy cloths you get from the optician. The undeniable drive to connect with another human being dissolves the unconscious protective layers, if you let it.
Now I notice when I start squinting, or when I feel separate and disconnected. I realize that it’s not the world making things harder for me and all I have to do is a bit of cleaning.
Aaaah, it’s all bright and sparkly again.
Is there someone in your life who will let you know your glasses are getting cloudy? Or better yet, give them a good polish?
Once you see the difference that a clean lens can make, you’ll keep your cloth close by.
